Balloon Decorations: Types, Prices and a Planning Guide
Balloons can turn an ordinary room corner at home or in a hall into a celebration. But only when it is clear what they need to do: mark a table, frame a photo zone or greet guests at the door. Below you will find balloon types, quantities, colour coordination, prices and a preparation plan. The goal is simple: buy as many balloons as you will actually need.
When balloons are really needed, and when they are not
The first question is simple: do you need balloons, or just a tidy backdrop for the cake and a few photos? A small family dinner at home does very well without them – the table, cake and light matter more. But a child’s birthday with friends, an anniversary or a themed party without balloons often looks unfinished.
- Small family dinner: a bit of table decor and one accent, for example a foil heart or a few balloons by the chair.
- Child’s birthday: balloons are worth the attention, because they instantly create the mood and become a photo backdrop.
- Kindergarten or school: choose fewer, but neatly fixed balloons, and discuss children with a latex allergy in advance.
- Adult party: a smaller amount of chrome and single-colour balloons, arranged in one composition, works well.
First choose one main decorative focal point, and only then fill the space with additional balloons.
Balloon types and who each suits

Latex (rubber) balloons
The everyday basis for garlands, clusters, arches and table compositions. They are easy to combine and inexpensive, which is why they make up most of the composition. Our latex balloons are 30 cm in diameter: matte, metallic, pastel, while transparent ones with confetti or dots suit accents. Sets also include smaller ones, for example 27 cm pastel or 12 cm bright-colour balloons.
Chrome balloons
Shiny, almost mirror-finish chrome balloons add depth and an “evening” effect to a composition. They look best in good light and combined with matte ones: a few chrome balloons among ten matte ones have more impact than a whole wall of shine.
Balloons with pictures and themed sets
When the celebration has a clear theme – dinosaurs, cars, football, safari or sea animals – balloons with pictures immediately show what is being celebrated. The easiest start is a ready-made balloon set, topped up with single-colour balloons from the same palette.
Foil balloons
Foil suits one bright accent, for example a foil heart beside the gift table or a chair. Ten small foil elements usually look worse than one larger one.
Simply put, latex gives the most colour for the lowest price, chrome gives shine, a themed set saves time, and foil works as a single accent.
Helium or air
Helium is needed only when balloons must float: bouquets beside chairs, clusters by the gift table or a ceiling effect. Latex balloons filled with helium stay up for a short time, usually less than a day, so inflate them as close to the celebration as possible.
Garlands, arches, columns and photo walls need only air. Such compositions hold as long as the structure itself does, so they can be prepared the day before. For small table compositions helium is also unnecessary – a clear 70 cm stand is enough to keep balloons upright.
Never let balloons go into the sky: they fall into nature like litter. After the celebration, pop them and throw them away.
Compositions and how many balloons you need
A common mistake is buying balloons “by eye” without a composition plan. A tidy garland and one strong accent look better than a bag of random colours.
A garland suits above a table or along a wall, a column suits beside the entrance or next to a cake, an arch makes the strongest first impression, and a photo zone is needed when photos are an important part of the celebration. In a small space, choose one main format and one smaller addition. For how to assemble a garland step by step, we have described it in our balloon garland guide.
| Composition | Minimum balloons | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Garland above table (2-2.5 m) | 30 | 60-80 |
| Column by the entrance | 7 | 7-10 per column |
| Arch around the door | 40 | depending on the width and density of the opening |
| Photo zone (1.5-2 m) | 20 | 90-120 if the wall is fully covered |
A colour ratio that works
- 60% main colour, so the decor reads clearly.
- 30% complementary colour, so the view does not blend into one blob.
- 10% contrast: chrome, confetti or a bright accent.
The same rule works for both children’s and adults’ parties.

Ideas by occasion
The theme must suit not only the occasion but also the guests. A children’s birthday needs a clear, playful signal, while at an adults’ party too many characters or colours spoil the overall look.
| Occasion | What works | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Children’s birthday | Themed set, garland, number candle on the cake | A mix of several themes |
| Teen party | Black, silver, chrome, one bright accent | Overly childish motifs |
| Christening | Pastel tones, a light photo zone | Dense, heavy compositions |
| Anniversary | Gold or silver, an elegant garland | Random colours |
| Corporate event | Company colours, a tidy column at the registration desk | Colours unrelated to the brand |
Balloons for a child’s birthday
Children under school age respond best to bright colours and one recognisable motif. For a dinosaur party, the green balloon set “Dinosaurs” fits well; for little animal lovers, the “Safari Animals” set, and for a car fan, the Eco balloon set “Cars”. You can conveniently gather the whole theme, from plates to garlands, in the children’s birthdays section.
For a softer celebration for little ones or a christening, the Eco pastel balloon set (50 pcs.) is enough for a small garland above the table. For teens, more restrained combinations work better: black, silver, dark blue.
You will find other birthday decorations, from party hats to cake candles, in the birthday decorations category.
Do it yourself or order
Doing it yourself is worth it when the composition is simple, you have time, and on the day of the party you will not also have to worry about food, guests and children. A 2-3 m garland takes two people about 1.5-2 hours. An ordered installation pays off when you need a large freestanding arch or when installing in a hall at a specific time.

When making it yourself, put on your list not only balloons but also a pump, string, adhesive hooks and 5-10 spare balloons. If a balloon bursts or one colour looks different from what you expected, a spare will save you from a trip to the shop on the morning of the party.
How much a balloon decoration costs
When doing it yourself, the cost depends almost entirely on the quantity. In our shop a single-colour 30 cm latex balloon costs about 0.20 EUR, a chrome one 0.50 EUR, themed sets from 3.89 to 7.50 EUR, and a clear stand 3.50 EUR.
| Composition | Contents | Approximate balloon cost |
|---|---|---|
| Garland above the table | 50 single-colour and 10 chrome | about 15 EUR |
| Column by the entrance | 10 single-colour | about 2 EUR |
| Themed table accent | Themed set and stand | about 7-11 EUR |
| Photo wall | 100 single-colour | about 20 EUR |
Add string, hooks and a pump if you do not have them yet. If you buy balloons together with tableware or a costume, check whether the basket stays under 49 EUR – then shipping to an LP or Unisend parcel locker is free (otherwise 2.99 EUR).
Preparation plan
Start not with the balloon colour, but with the date, the venue and the main accent.
- Measure the space: the width and height of the wall, table or entrance.
- Choose one theme and two or three colours.
- Count balloons by composition, not “by eye”.
- Assess safety: latex, small children, fixing points.
- Order at least 3-4 days before the celebration: we dispatch the same or next working day, and parcels to a parcel locker take 1-2 working days.
- Have a plan for outdoors: wind and direct sun quickly damage a latex composition.

If only a few days remain before the celebration, choose the simplest solution: one themed set with a stand on the table and a few single-colour balloons by the door. If you have a week, you can calmly plan a garland or photo wall. You will find all balloons and sets in the balloons category.
