Kids' Face Masks: How to Choose One That's Safe and Fun

A children’s carnival mask is a small purchase, but it is usually the thing that decides whether a child stays in costume for the whole celebration or hands it back to you after ten minutes. The most beautiful mask is no good if it presses on the nose, covers the eyes or pulls at the ears. What kinds of children’s masks there are

Animal masks

The most popular choice for the little ones. They are light and instantly turn a child into a fox, a hedgehog or a little lion. Some, such as the hedgehog mask, are worn on top of the head like a cap, so the face stays open. Suitable for kindergarten celebrations, performances and birthdays. Character and superhero masks

A plastic mask with a clear silhouette, for example the Batman mask, suits a superhero party. It covers only the upper part of the face, so the child can speak, eat and drink freely.

Masks for painting

Plastic masks of a skeleton, devil or other characters look impressive, but for long wear by a small child they are too hard and hot. They suit teenagers and a short photo session better.

How to choose size and material

A mask should fit well but not press. If it is too wide, it slips and the child keeps adjusting it. If it is too narrow, it presses the temples and nose.

Checklist before buying

• Eye holes: are they big enough for the child to see to the sides and the stairs under their feet.
• Fastening: the elastic band should hold but not leave red marks behind the ears.
• Edges: soft, without sharp plastic edges.
• Weight: the younger the child, the lighter the mask should be.
• Nose area: the mask must not press the nostrils or interfere with breathing.

The age label is not the final answer. One six-year-old may fit a mask perfectly, while another with a smaller face will find it too big. If you can, try it on at home before the celebration and, if necessary, shorten the elastic band.

Material and comfort

For long wear a light, flexible mask is best. Hard plastic looks good in photos, but after half an hour under it the child sweats. If a mask rubs the skin, a soft strip or a piece of felt can be glued under the elastic strap.

A practical observation: the longer the mask stays on the face, the more important it is that it is light and has soft edges.

How to match a mask with a costume

The mask usually sets the character’s face. When it is chosen precisely, the outfit looks uniform, even if the other clothes are simple.

For a kindergarten carnival a mask and a garment in a suitable colour are often enough: a full costume is not needed. If you want a full look, combine the mask with a costume from the children’s costume category or the animal costumes.

When to choose face paint instead of a mask

If the child is very active, dances, runs around or always wants to eat and drink, face paint may be more comfortable than a mask. This suits the smallest children, who dislike anything on their face.

Drawing a cat’s whiskers, a puppy’s nose or tiger stripes takes a few minutes. To start, a 6-colour face paint set or a face paint palette (7 colours) is enough. Princesses and unicorn fans prefer stick-on face gems “Unicorn”, which leave no colour on clothes.

Mask for a kindergarten celebration: a few practical tips

At a kindergarten carnival there are dozens of masks, and they all look alike. Write the child’s name on the inside so it does not get lost after the celebration. Put a spare elastic band in the backpack: it usually breaks at the most inconvenient moment.

Before the celebration let the child wear the mask at home for at least ten minutes. You will see whether it rubs, whether the child can see the stairs, and whether they want to wear it at all. If not, it is better to find out at home rather than in the hall before the performance.

For the smallest children, who do not yet like anything on their face, the mask can be attached to a headband and worn on the forehead. The character is still recognisable, and the face stays free.

Care and storage

Most carnival masks are not washable. Wipe them with a damp cloth, and wipe painted or glued details only with a dry cloth. Store them flat, in a box or a drawer, so the shape does not bend and the elastic does not stretch. A well-kept mask will serve another carnival, or even a younger brother or sister.

Choose a light animal or character mask that does not cover the mouth. The child speaks and sings freely, and educators can more easily recognise who is who.

Birthday and themed party
